Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.
Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Athletes are granted the option to contest certain calls made by the official, following the practice already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This step arrives only a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old role of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review other decisions, including:
- Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
- Potential hindrance end of a rally.
Notably, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a player can ask for.
Case in Point
A recent case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire watched a replay and ruled the player was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.
Further Updates
A further change at The Championships this year involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was out or in.
In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
