British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, identified by intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of approach shafts down to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - established extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with our allies, to stamp out any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," Healey said. "They were among a great many UK service members stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to remove militants who pose a risk to our way of life, highlights how British military are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
