Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The United States monetary authority lowered interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in early September, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in August.

The figure of positions added to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline

Though BLS was set to release last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its release when the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in September, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for September that showed that costs are rising, albeit slowly. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
