European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other legal developments:

  • A US district judge has blocked efforts to cut security grants to local governments that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The judge stated the action was “a further instance” of linking government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of 350 national guard members to New Orleans prior to the holiday period, alongside an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to take in a limited number of individuals from the US in return for increased assistance, following concluding a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit to demand the stripping of a political figure’s name from a well-known cultural institution in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a wider ideology in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy strategies.
